The Song of India definitely needs no introduction, what with it being Southeast Asia’s only Indian restaurant to receive a Michelin Star. Set in a charming Black and White near the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, this is one of the most popular fine dining Indian restaurants in Singapore, having garnered several awards and accolades under the leadership of Executive Chef Manjunath Mural. Interestingly, Chef Mural comes from a long line of doctors, but he followed his heart and embraced his love for cooking.

The Experience

The experience starts as soon as you enter the premises. The bungalow is set amidst lush green surroundings. The restaurant, with its opulent interiors, lavish décor, luxurious table settings and a lovely ambience, offers the perfect venue for a fine meal – be it a romantic dinner for two, an intimate dinner with friends, or even a high-flying business lunch.

I would normally recommend The Song of India for a romantic evening out, but Sunday being Family Day, it is the perfect place for a laid-back family brunch. Kids are expected and there are plenty of families with kids around.

Chef Mural uses traditional Indian preparation methods and blends them with flavours from around the world, resulting in a culinary style that he calls ‘Global Indian Gastronomy’. In fact, that’s one of the things I love most about this place. Most Indian restaurants offer either a blanket South-Indian or North-Indian cuisine but what sets The Song of India apart is that here you can ‘Journey Through India’. Chef Mural offers dishes and flavours from all over India, so you can get to experience cuisine from across India.

Last week we went (again) for the Sunday Brunch Buffet and at S$48++, I think it is an absolute steal, especially since kids get to dine free with paying adults. Seriously, where else can you get fantastic, Michelin starred food for the family at just over S$100?

Platter of Vegetarian Kebabs

To start with, we opted for a Platter of Vegetarian Kebabs, which included a beautifully flavoured dish of Tandoori Potatoes and a kachori chaat. I especially loved the hints of mustard in the potatoes. You can ask for unlimited servings of the kebabs, but if I were you, I wouldn’t do that as there is still a lot to come.

Veg Frankies, done live to your taste

For Sunday brunch, there is also a live counter that serves different dishes every Sunday – the live counter is always vegetarian. On this Sunday, they were cooking delicious Veg Frankies (a popular Mumbai roadside snack, made somewhat like crepes and served as a stuffed roll) – you can choose veggies and condiments of your choice for the stuffing and try different combinations if you like. The chef made non-spicy cheese Frankies for the kids, on request.

Once you’ve had your fill of the kebabs, move on to soup and salads. The salad bar always has an interesting mix of salads on offer – we tried the Pasta Salad and Beetroot Salad. The soup on offer was Tomato Coriander Soup. I enjoyed my soup with the papads and Fried Lotus Roots.

The mains comprised of a good selection of vegetarian dishes – Veg Biryani, Dal Makhani, Palak Paneer, Achaari Baingan (spiced, pickled baby eggplant) and Masala Mixed-Vegetables along with Raita. While all dishes were good, the star dish for me was the Palak Paneer (spinach and cottage cheese) – very well flavoured with exactly the right spices. You can have unlimited servings of everything, and Naans (Bread) from your choice of plain, butter or garlic will be served at the table.

Matcha madness at the Dessert Station

The desserts were quite varied too. My kids had 4 pieces each of the Pista Burfi (don’t judge me people, they hardly ever eat burfi so I didn’t have the heart to refuse). Kids also loved the Alphonso Mango Ice Cream and so did the adults for that matter. . Other desserts  on offer were the Dry Fruit Seviyan Kheer, Gulab Jamun and Matcha Cheesecake, besides Fresh Fruits. The Dry Fruit Seviyan Kheer – an Indian dessert made from vermicelli and milk – was a hit with me as it wasn’t too sweet.

Some of the dishes might be spicy for younger kids but that is to be expected in an Indian restaurant. But overall, there were a few non-spicy dishes, so everyone should be able to have a great meal with good variety.

Note for Vegetarians and Vegans:
The Song of India has several vegan dishes on the menu as well. As compared to vegetarians, vegans would definitely have less choice, but they’re happy to suggest suitable dishes, so if you’re unsure just ask.
