It’s festival season and joy is all around. As we all gear up to shop for Christmas gifts, lets also spare a thought for those less fortunate. If you’re looking for a cause to support or want to make a contribution towards helping people, here are a few charities and organisations that will help spread some cheer where it is most required. Some of these causes and campaigns run only for a few days this month, so do spread the word as much as possible.
Community Chest Christmas Campaign 2017
This Christmas, Community Chest aims to give people a reason to celebrate though a network of 80 social service organisations. Donate generously as all donations will go towards empowering children with special needs, vulnerable seniors, youth at risk, adults with disabilities, persons with mental health issues and those that need help strengthening families. CCIS My Christmas Wish
Celebrate Christmas in Singapore (CCIS) was started in 2004 to spread the message of peace and joy. This year, CCIS 2017 is scheduled to be held from 16th – 23rd December. To share your good fortune with needy children in Singapore, you can donate from their Christmas Wish page. Make their Christmas special and fulfil wishes of 1000 primary school children who will be choosing presents consisting of school essentials worth S$50. If you are keen to volunteer, you may contact them to help around by being hospitable to the guest performers who will be performing during the celebrations, connect with passers-by and at the booths.

It’s Raining Raincoats
A project set up to help migrant workers stay shielded during the rains with a raincoat, It’s Raining Raincoats encourages people to keep on them a few disposable raincoats and pass them to migrant workers when they see them, take a picture and post with the hashtag #Itsrainingraincoats on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (make sure the post is public!). You can even message the FB page to get contact details for where you can drop them. This Christmas, they are encouraging people to donate pre-loved items such as hand phones, ear phones, umbrellas, raincoats, sun hats, caps, sun glasses, sports shoes (adult male sizes, back packs and more, in good condition). The Boy’s Brigade Share-A-Gift
The annual Share-A-Gift charity drive of Boys’ Brigade (BB) now accepts donations online. Started in 1988 to promote caring and sharing among the local community during Christmas, it has volunteers collecting grocery items and gifts for the needy. The monetary donations are on till 31st December this year, while the gifts can be shared from 21st November to 18th December. Apart from direct monetary contributions, you can choose to fulfil selected wishes from individuals by browsing through wish tags on any of the six wish trees at NTUC Fairprice outlets in Ang Mo Kio, Jurong Point, Nex Mall, Singapore Sports Hub, Jem Mall and the Warehouse Club in Joo Koon. Singapore Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettling

Singapore Salvation Army calls out to all those who wish to bring some cheer to the needy and underprivileged through its annual bell ringing fundraiser for Christmas. Each Kettling will be allotted for 2 hours and donations collected will be used for charity. On from 25th November to 23rd December 2017, if you are above 16 years of age, you can go bell-ringing at a location of your choice, during a suitable time slot. Meals-on-Wheels by Touch Community Services
While it is not specifically for Christmas, it is much more required around festival time when the elderly are feeling lonely while the world celebrates with their families. Even if it is not a feast, a warm meal can be just what they need to cheer them up around Christmas. TOUCH Home Care’s Meals-on-Wheels, as the name suggests, delivers meals daily to the home-bound elderly. Volunteer need to be above 15 years and preferably be able to drive.

Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen
Again, not just a Christmas thing, Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen fills tummies with food and that alone should be motivation enough for you to want to give it a go this Christmas. Open all through the year, they are always on the lookout for volunteers to help prepare ingredients, pack lunch boxes, wash work stations and general help around the place. Children’s Charities Association Christmas Fair and Walkathon
Children’s Charities Association conducts fundraising events for its Member Charities which help children in Singapore who are physically, mentally and socially disadvantaged. Every year, for the last 12 years, they have a Christmas Fair and Walkathon where proceeds from food, games and stalls benefit kids through CCA. You can volunteer to help, be an event sponsor or make donations.

Toys From The Heart
Playthings like toys are an integral part of childhood and Toys From The Heart understands it very well. They deliver a message of hope to needy children by distributing pre-loved toys, games and dolls at various occasions, festivals and events. To help grow, this wonderful programme needs volunteers to help toys for their Toys Buffet and Christmas Parties.
