It’s festival season and joy is all around. As we all gear up to shop for Christmas gifts, lets also spare a thought for those less fortunate. If you’re looking for a cause to support or want to make a contribution towards helping people, here are a few charities and organisations that will help spread some cheer where it is most required. Some of these causes and campaigns run only for a few days this month, so do spread the word as much as possible.

This Christmas, Community Chest aims to give people a reason to celebrate though a network of 80 social service organisations. Donate generously as all donations will go towards empowering children with special needs, vulnerable seniors, youth at risk, adults with disabilities, persons with mental health issues and those that need help strengthening families. CCIS My Christmas Wish

Celebrate Christmas in Singapore (CCIS) was started in 2004 to spread the message of peace and joy. This year, CCIS 2018 is scheduled to be held from 16th – 23rd December. To share your good fortune with needy children in Singapore, you can donate from their Christmas Wish page. Make their Christmas special and fulfil wishes of 1000 primary school children who will be choosing presents consisting of school essentials worth S$50. If you are keen to volunteer, you may contact them to help around by being hospitable to the guest performers who will be performing during the celebrations, connect with passers-by and at the booths.

ItsRainingRaincoats

ItsRainingRaincoats is a simple initiative that was set up a couple of years ago to spread kindness to migrant workers in Singapore! Their Christmas 2018 initiative calls upon people to make this Christmas a merry one for migrant workers by donating colourfully and cheerily wrapped Xmas presents that will be passed on to workers to make the festive season brighter for them. Gift ideas include Tiger Balm, Toiletries, Chocolates, Umbrellas, Sunglasses, Headphones, Data Cards, Waterbottles, Backpacks etc. They also need volunteers to assist with distribution of the presents and construction sites (on specific dates).

The Boy’s Brigade Share-A-Gift

The annual Share-A-Gift charity drive of Boys’ Brigade (BB) now accepts donations online. Started in 1988 to promote caring and sharing among the local community during Christmas, it has volunteers collecting grocery items and gifts for the needy. The monetary donations are on till 31st December this year, while the gifts can be shared from 21st November to 31st December. Apart from direct monetary contributions, you can choose to fulfil selected wishes from individuals by browsing through wish tags on any of the six wish trees at NTUC Fairprice outlets in Ang Mo Kio, Jurong Point, Nex Mall, Singapore Sports Hub, Jem Mall and the Warehouse Club in Joo Koon. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettling

The Salvation Army calls out to all those who wish to bring some cheer to the needy and underprivileged through its annual bell ringing fundraiser for Christmas. Each Kettling will be allotted for 2 hours and donations collected will be used for charity. On from 24th November to 24th December 2018, if you are above 16 years of age, you can go bell-ringing at a location of your choice, during a suitable time slot. Meals-on-Wheels by Touch Community Services

While it is not specifically for Christmas, it is much more required around festival time when the elderly are feeling lonely while the world celebrates with their families. Even if it is not a feast, a warm meal can be just what they need to cheer them up around Christmas. TOUCH Home Care’s Meals-on-Wheels, as the name suggests, delivers meals daily to the home-bound elderly. Volunteer need to be above 15 years and preferably be able to drive.

Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen

Again, not just a Christmas thing, Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen fills tummies with food and that alone should be motivation enough for you to want to give it a go this Christmas. Open all through the year, they are always on the lookout for volunteers to help prepare ingredients, pack lunch boxes, wash work stations and general help around the place. Anyone who comes to the kitchen looking for a meal is offered one – from the elderly to low income families. Should you wish to donate in cash or kind, check out the different ways here.

Playthings like toys are an integral part of childhood and Toys From The Heart understands it very well. They deliver a message of hope to needy children by distributing pre-loved toys, games and dolls at various occasions, festivals and events. To help grow, this wonderful programme needs volunteers to help toys for their Toys Buffet and Christmas Parties.
